Recently opened in August down on Stanley St East, The Smug Fig has everything to be smug about.
Owners Troy, Arron and Nick took their hospitality experience, a whole lot of Chutzpah and turned a shipping container and an old garage into the ideal summer cafe. The result is a large, sunlit space abundant in fresh artwork; a venue that is perfect for a Saturday brunch catch up with friends (kids welcome!), yet plentiful in cosy nooks for a solo morning tea retreat from the office.
The bright and airy cafe is sandwiched between a makeshift nursery and Drift – a quaint boutique selling clothes, jewellery and homewares. It’s the perfect place to pretend that your life is the inspiration for every homewares magazine ever.
I stopped past The Smug Fig with fellow HITW writer, Jess a couple of weeks ago for an early morning mid-week treat-yo-self breakfast. If only I could start every weekday like this!
The day I never thought I’d see had arrived and I ordered the healthy option *gasp* – the bircher muesli with figs, walnuts, greek yogurt and honey. I did not regret my choice in the slightest. On the rare occasion I go with the #cleaneating option on the menu, it’s usually because I’ve had a sudden and divine realisation that my body is my temple but it fades as quick as it came and before I know it I have a bowl of soggy oats and fruit in front of me. BUT NOT THIS TIME.
The muesli was fresh, filling and not overly sweet. It was perfectly complimented with the mild figs, tart natural greek yogurt and the walnuts gave it some great texture. I was full all morning and I didn’t feel heavy. Maybe there is something in this #cleaneating thing….
Jess had the crushed avo on sourdough with some poached eggs. I’m a firm believer that if a cafe can’t do a good crushed avo then they don’t deserve to call themselves a cafe. The Smug Fig can continue being smug because they did a damn fine avo on toast.
The coffee was excellent too – the icing on the breakfast cake if you will.
The Smug Fig is open for breakfast and lunch, 7 days, 6am-3pm and are located at 999 Stanley St East, East Brisbane.
